Making Australian Schools Safer - NCAB report

There is a growing awareness within Australia of the importance of safe learning environments in promoting social and academic outcomes for students. "Making Australian Schools Safer", written by Dr Helen McGrath, showcases best practice in Australian schools through the National Safe Schools Framework Best Practice Grants Programme.

Funding was provided by the Department of Education, Science and Training to the National Coalition Against Bullying to administer the Grants Programme through The Alannah and Madeline Foundation. The report focuses on the six guiding principles for success in developing and maintaining safe schools and provides recommendations for schools to support innovative and effective approaches to safe school environments for both staff and students.

Cyber-Safety Symposium Report

To begin to address the issue of cyber-safety and cyber-bullying, the National Centre Against Bullying (NCAB) with support from the Centre for Strategic Education (CSE) held a symposium in Melbourne on 17 and 18 May aimed at achieving a cyber-safe Australia.

Federal Communications Minister Helen Coonan and Victorian Education Minister Jacinta Allan addressed the symposium, which was supported by the Telstra Foundation. In addition, cyber-safety specialists from the USA, New Zealand and Australian, including several NCAB members, gave insightful presentations.

The symposium participants agreed that cyber-safety requires a coordinated and collaborative national approach. As a result, NCAB is now working with a variety of interest groups including education, welfare, industry, government, police, parents, students and not-for-profit to harness the outcomes of the symposium.
